Before giant, massive computer programs were developed to do energy audits of large buildings in the late 90s, energy conservation projects were analyzed using a series of nomographs developed by the US Department of Energy during the energy crisis in the 70s.
As part of the Small Hospitals Energy Management Project, established by the Texas LoanStar Program (the largest energy conservation program in the world at the time), the author converted the nomographs into mathematical equations.
These equations were even more accurate than the nomographs because they interpolated values.
Real World Application
The author built these equations into a spreadsheet, and Texas LoanStar Program engineers approved them to certify energy-saving projects in a dozen small hospitals in central Texas.
If the program is good enough for hospitals, the most complex buildings there are, it’s more than adequate for your home or business.
The spreadsheet is just a single page where all the calculations are done, plus a couple of worksheets with the data you will need to plug into the form.
