Fatherland arrives as a fever dream stitched from Cold War paranoia and climate dread — and it largely delivers. Set against Antarctica’s brutal, indifferent expanse, the novel plants its hero, Waco, a wildlife biologist with inconvenient principles, inside a conspiracy that implicates the Pentagon, weaponized satellites, and a volcano the military has essentially gift-wrapped. The prose is kinetic, occasionally breathless, and the environmental stakes feel uncomfortably prescient. Cherokee, the journalism student turned reluctant revolutionary, adds moral counterweight. The military-industrial complex rarely gets such a geologically dramatic unmasking. Pulpy? Absolutely. Forgettable? Decidedly not.
