The original versions were written in dBase. Then I got fired from my engineering job and decided to go to grad school in Aerospace Engineering. My PhD research project was a computer model of the Earth-to-Mars trajectory. It was written in FORTRAN, which has very similar commands to dBase, so I was a real whiz. (All the billions of lines of legacy code at NASA are still vintage FORTRAN.)
After my dismissal, I used the same Lahey-Fujitsu FORTRAN suite to build the energy apps, and Winteracter to create the front end. The installation routine that sets everything up was the standard PKZipWare of the day.
The apps still function very well. The compiled FORTRAN is very efficient, and the footprint of the programs is around 1 MB each, smaller than a photo taken with your smartphone.
About the Apps
Each download is a ZIP file with a ReadMe.txt file and an executable .exe file when you unzip the file. Click on the .exe file, and there is an automated installer that sets up the program and its files, including an icon on your Start menu. Each file is around 1 MB.
Sometimes Windows doesn’t want to run the .exe file. Just run it as an Administrator and set Windows to compatibility mode.
Don’t be afraid to try the Mars app. It’s not complicated. There are color printouts, help screens, and many options to try. One professor was using it in his orbital mechanics classes at another university.
The remaining programs do industry-standard calculations. I used them to promote my two energy conservation textbooks. They are commercial quality and pretty much indestructible.
